June 6, 2011 Club Meeting Review
Just Photos

A regular meeting of Space Center Rotary was held at Bay Oaks Country Club.  Dr. Jack Bacon lead members in song, President David Coney  gave the prayer, Dr. Ted Cummings lead in the Pledge of Allegiance to the U.S. Flag, and Constable Phil Sandlin lead  in the Four Way Test.  Dr. Greg Smith introduced visitors and guests.  District 5890 Governor Elect Chris Schneider (right) and District 5890 Governor Nominee Bob Gebhard were among the guests.   Chris brought several other guests, Andre's Schneider and Joe Geronimo both from New Jersey, and Andreas Koettnite and Monfred Dehnen both from Germany.

Diane Savage, (right) President & CEO, announced Bay Area Turning Point (BATP) will reach an Agency milestone this fall: two decades of saving and restoring lives—75,312 women, children and men to be exact. Space Center Rotary is one of the Agency’s earliest supporters and continues to be a Partner in our efforts today.  Space Center Rotary’s Partnership helps to ensure that our programs remain strong for those who rely on us 24-hours a day, every day to rebuild a shattered life.   Of the $3,000 generously donated to BATP on June 6, $2,000 will be applied to the Space center Rotary Partnership gift with BATP and $1,000 will be announced as an Underwriter to the Agency’s upcoming special event!   The Club donated $5,000 to help build the original facility in 1992.

Past District Governor Suzi Howe inducted new member Keith Owens (right) sponsored by Olive Murphy-Riker.  Keith is employed by Prudential Gary Greene Realtors.  President Coney awarded $1,000 "Service Above Self" scholarship to two Interact students based on achieving academic excellence, exhibiting outstanding leadership in community outreach, and  actively involved in extra curricular activities.  Read more about these two outstanding students; Sara Maben and Siddharth Arora.

John Branch introduced Jim Sweeney as the program speaker.  Jim along with his partner and wife of 28 years, Jane, has owned and operated Minuteman Press-Bay Area, a full service printing company in the Clear Lake area.  Jim has very recently started up a new company, Big Daddy Marketing, LLC, a Managed Marketing Services company.  Jim gave a preseetnation on QR Code.  A QR code (abbreviation for Quick Response code) is a specific matrix barcode (or two-dimensional code) that is readable by dedicated QR barcode readers and camera telephones. The code consists of black modules arranged in a square pattern on a white background. The information encoded may be text, URL, or other data.  Common in Japan, where it was created by Toyota subsidiary Denso-Wave in 1994, the QR code is one of the most popular types of two-dimensional barcodes. The QR code was created to allow its contents to be decoded at high speed.  The technology has seen frequent use in Japan and South Korea, however, in the West there has been a slower adoption of QR codes.

President Coney  gave Jim an engraved Rotary paper weight and adjourned the meeting.

Work at Hope Village Begins

Installing a wall to make a large storage room in the recreation building at Hope Village began last week.  Phil Messarra, Friendswood Rotary Club and frequent visitor to our Club, headed up the project.  The new room is 30 by 12 feet and will be used as an additional storage in the recreation building.  Currently miscellaneous material, chairs, and props from stage plays were scattered throughout the building making it difficult to use the exercise equipment (more photos will be in a later issue).  Phil Harris brought eleven of his associates to help clean up, straighten up, organize, and fix up the building.  As President Coney said “they were awesome”.  Finishing work remains to be done, but the recreation building is now well organized and useable.
