May 2, 2011 Club Meeting Review
 Photos of Meeting

A regular meeting of the Space Center Rotary was held on May 2nd at the Bay Oaks Country Club.  President David Coney called the meeting to order.  Peter Wuenschel led the members singing “God Bless America”.  Carlos Villagomez made mention of the Memorial in downtown Webster for our Service men and women and led the prayer.  Phillip Harris gave the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by John Branch leading the Four Way Test.

Olive Riker Murphy introduced visitors and guests, including District Governor-Elect Chris Schneider.  President Coney recognized visitors from Hope Village.  Roger Donnelly reminded members of the Floyd Boze Paul Harris Fellowship Dinner on May 12th.  Skeeter Braun announced that the Softball Association his daughter participates in is raising funds for equipment and player sponsorships, and the hat was passed around the room for donations.  President Coney announced that the next Rotary golf outing will be at Bay Forest.  RSVP to Dick Hergert.

The District 5890 Conference was last weekend, and a number of Space Center Rotary members were recognized with positions of authority and/or awards.  Kippy Carraway was picked to run the orientation meeting for first time attendees.  Kippy and Bob Swint  made the display board for our club, and Suzi Howe was in charge of the wine tasting and major donor reception.  Jon McKinnie received a coveted Governors Award for his service to the District, and Suzi Howe was recognized as past District Governor of the Year.  In addition, Suzi received a Meritorious Service award.  Only 150 recipients are chosen for this award each year out of a possible membership of 1.2 million people.  Our voting delegates were Marilyn Musial, David Coney, Scott Rainey, and Kippy Carraway.  One of the tasks up for vote was selection of District Governor Committee members for the 2014 position.  Jon McKinnie has been given charge of that committee.  Alan Wyle received the Governors Award recognizing our District as having the best Youth Exchange Program in the entire North America region.  President Coney also expressed thanks to his wife Andrea for preparing the food for our Club’s Hospitality Suite.

President Coney and Al Ligrani presented a check for $2,000 to Rebecca Johnston  (center), President of Meals on Wheels.  Ms. Johnston expressed appreciation, noting that the donation will provide 532 meals, or 8 days of meals for the 65-75 people they feed daily.

John Branch introduced Rotary member John Lee, who took us back to the early years of the Manned Spaceflight Program and its origins in 1948 under the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics.  Read John Lee's talk and view his slide presentation (later).

After the presentation, the meeting was adjourned by President Coney.
