May 9, 2011 Club Meeting Review

L to R: Past District 5890 Governor and Past Club President Suzi Howe,
Past Club President Dr. Vissett Sun,
new members Dr. Rosalind Perez and Ellen Cyr,
and Past Club President and District 5890 Chief of Staff Jon McKinnie

A regular meeting of the Space Center Rotary Club was held on May 9 at Bay Oaks County Club.  Jack Bacon led members singing “My Country Tis of Thee”.  Carlos Villagomez gave the opening prayer, Mary Alice Cherry led the Pledge of Allegiance, and John Swartout kicked off the Four Way Test.  Mike Dennard introduced visitors and guests, including past Assistant District Governor Terry Ziegler.

Jerry Smith and Geoff Atwater auctioned off remaining Springoree items.  Roger Donnelly reminded members to RSVP for the Floyd Boze Paul Harris dinner this Thursday.  President David Coney reminded members that the meeting next week will be the Teacher of the Year Awards at South Shore Harbor.  The meeting will begin at 11:30.  The Rotary National Space Achievement Dinner was held last weekend and was a big success.  Rudolfo Gonzalez did a great job putting the event together.  Members who helped with the program were recognized.  Terry Ziegler,
the District Polio Plus Chair, spoke briefly concerning the Bill Gates challenge for matching funds and summarized recent advances in polio eradication.  He noted that he will be serving with Suzi Howe as co-chair of the Rotary Foundation in the coming year.

Past District Governor Suzi Howe inducted two new members:  Ellen Cyr,  sponsored by Jon McKinnie, and Dr. Rosalind Perez,  sponsored by Vissett Sun.  Suzi also updated members concerning the District Conference and thanked those who helped with the program.

President Coney and Mike Hernandez presented a check for $1,000 to Gary Hinners,  (speaking)  Bayshore District Chair, Sam Houston Area Council, Boy Scouts of America.  President Coney and Becky Reitz presented a check for $5,000 to Peter Wuenschel  (right), Director of Bay Area Communities in Schools.

John Branch introduced Harris County Pct. 2 Commissioner Jack Morman.   Commissioner Morman recognized member Phil Sandlin for his upcoming promotion to Constable for Pct. 8, then gave an update on issues addressed during his first four months in office.  He recapped his efforts to balance the budget and to recover from his predecessor’s deficit spending.  The budget is set at just under $29 million, down from $42 million last year.  His main focus will be to jump start the capital improvement program.  Projects are being reviewed and reprioritized.  The programs for senior citizens, veterans, and youth have seen some staff cuts, but there are no changes planned for these programs.  Commissioner Morman noted that the County’s core mission is to ensure that the infrastructure functions and stated that his vote will never be for raising taxes.  President Coney expressed appreciation for his attendance, and  adjourned the meeting.

Floyd Boze/Paul Harris Dinner
"The Best Rotary Social in Years" .....  Roger Donnelly

The second annual Paul Harris/Floyd Boze Fellow Dinner was  "The Best Rotary Social in Years" said  Roger Donnelly.  About thirty were in attendance including Floyd Boze, his Daughter and Grand Daughter.  This was Floyd's first social gathering since he got out of the hospital.  Also in attendance were future District Governors Chris Schneider and  Bob Gebhart.  We gathered at the Bay Oaks Country Club Thursday, May 12th.  The evening was full of great stories about Rotary and fond memories was shared with Floyd Boze; I believe this is what made it so fun.  After an update on The Rotary Foundation, at least 8 people got up to share stories and even Floyd spoke up when he made some comments about how Rotarians are at their best when they are having fun.  Bob Wren did a wonderful update on the SCRC endowment foundation and also let us know about a very exciting project for a Fallen Astronaut Memorial.  The banners that Art Oswald had made listing all of our Paul Harris/Floyd Boze Fellows in club history were on display and soon two more names will be added.  Sheryl Berg received a Paul Harris Fellow and PE Mike Dennard received a Floyd Boze Fellow.  Thank you to Roger Donnelly and Art Oswald for planning such a wonderful event.  Remarks by President Coney.
