Information
Rotary Year 2013-2014
The regular meetings of Rotary were held
at the Bay Oaks Country Club and called to order by President
Sheyl Berg. Dr. Jack Bacon
normally led the singing and
Dennis
Dillon said the
prayer. Reciting the Pledge of Allegiance to the
American Flag and the Four Way
Test; and introducing visitors and guests
were by different members of the Club each meeting. A Rotary
moment by a Club member was also a regular
feature of the program. A Rotary family out was usually
twice a month at local restaurants and fellowship golf about
every week weather permitting. Distinguished guests
visited the Club periodically and are noted in the
respected meeting dates below.
July 1, 2013 No Club Meeting
July 8, 2013 Assistant District 5890 Vicki
Brentin briefed the Club on what the 2013-14 Rotary
International motto, Engage Rotary and Change Lives, means to
Rotarians and to the world who Rotary serves.
July 15, 2013 Two new members, Mark Hollis
and Dr. Carl Stockton gave an overview of their life’s
biography. Stan Galanski, Suzi Howe, and Sheryl Berg
presented their perspective on the Rotary International
Convention in Lisbon, Portugal.

Cannon, Houston Zoo President; CEO, spoke on the
Houston Zoo. Kaci

July 29, 2013 Mark Smith, Principal
of Whitcomb Elementary, spoke on the EarlyAct FirstKnight at
Whitcomb Elementary and about the school itself. He
continued to praise the Club for the support in the EarlyAct
First Knight program at the school and said that he was
blessed not only by Rotary but the relationship with the Club
members. He also noted that the school had 28 languages
and that over 40% of the students were at risk. Appoline

2013 District 5890 Governor
Bob Gebhard
gave an overview of his vision for the District for the Rotary
year. His focus was membership, The Rotary Foundation,
and fellowship/networking. He followed his presentation
with a moving Rotary Moment regarding Angola Prison in
Louisiana. Kevin

Varma received their blue
badges.
August 12,
2013 Butch Hosler
and Bruce Litton talked about Team River Runner’s organization
“Paddle Sports” for wounded vets from Iraq and Afghanistan
other vets with cancer, diabetes, etc. Established Aug
2004 at Walter Reed Hospital. Activities occurred at
pools, local river outings, local open water (bay/ocean/lakes)
and family or get away events.

Stockman, US Congressman Texas gave an update on the U. S.
Congress. Marcus Rohl (center, in
bound student from Sweden, was presented his Blue Badge as a
member of the Club."

2013 Harris County Judge Ed
Emmett presented the program and discussed the disposition
of the Astro Dome, Healthcare in Harris County, Houston Port,
and the Highway System. Anna
Coupry, inbound student from Fance was introduced to the
members.

Day
September 9, 2013 Meredith Iler
discussed the "Helping a Hero" program. Jon McKinnie
presented new member Wendy Holley her red
badge.

Johnson Space Center (JSC) Deputy
Director presented a status of NASA and JSC.

2013 Dr. Greg Smith, CCISD Superintendent intoduced
a team of instructors and
students who build an airplane as part of the
Clear Springs HS Engineering Program. Mike Sullivan,
Houston City Councilman, was
a guest of the Club.

30, 2013 Amy Ammerman, San Jacinto
College discussed Veterans Initiatives at San Jacinto
College. Gary Renola received his red badge.
October 7, 2013
Phil Sandlin, Harris County Constable Pct 8, talked about crime
trends in Clear Lake area. He also showed a video "Run,
Hide, and Fight" regarding shooters. Scott Rainey,
Shirmporee Chair, gave an update on the Shirmporee.

Fred Lewis, of
the Bronze Eagles, showed a slide presentation titled "Summer
Flight Academy/Houston Fl-in" and urged the Club to be an
active supporter of the program. Rtn. M. Prakash
of India exchanged his club, Rotary Club of Navi Mumbai
Sunrise, District 3140, Club No. 76727, VASUDHAIVAKUTUMBAKAM,
banner with President Berg. Revision to the Club’s
Bylaws was approved unanimously. The "Shrimp" made a
visit to the and encouraged all to be there October 21 for the
40th Shrimporee

by President Berg for receiving knighthood at the April
15 Early Act First Knight program at Whitcomb
Elementary.

June 30, 2014 President Berg's last Club meeting was
filled with emotion and excitment. She gave an comprehinsive
overview of her Rotary year with emphasis on the youth,
military veterans, and literacy. As always her presentaion was
heart felt and informative. An unquiqe approach to recognizing
the military veterans was by having her spouse, Stu, sing the
theme song of each branch of service and have the respective
Club members stand. She rewarded each on with a small USA
flag. She gave out awards to Suzi Howe, Jerrold Dewease, Jerry
Smith, Marilyn Musial, and John Branch. She recognized Wendy
Holley as an outstanding new member Rotarian. Rotary
Interantional Exchange students Anna Coupry, Marcus Rhold, and
Megan Scoffield were present.
