The
history for the Rotary Club of Space Center (Houston), Texas,
and U.S.A. has been compiled from previously written histories
and chronologies which can be found in the Welcome section
of the Home Page. For the most part, the wording
of these previously written histories have been used verbatim
except for the insertion of additional information found
elsewhere, obvious errors, and annotations by Historian
2009.
There were very few documents in the history file.
No information could be found about the Board of Directors,
financial information, or a membership directory other than
names in committees. The information about the officer
noted above was found in other history documents.
However the Rotary year 1971-1972 budget
documents contained a tabulation of budgets for Rotary years
1967-68, 1968-69, 1969-70, and 1970-71. It is noted in
this document that the total budget for Rotary year 1968-69
was $8,685 with $2,322 donated to
following
service projects:
Freeman Library, International
Education Students, Scholarships/Citizenship Awards, Interact,
Harris County Boy’s Home, Little League, Boys Scouts, Career
Day, YMCA, Junior Achievement, and the second year for the
Drug Awareness Program. This brings the total amount
of funds received and donated to $4,922 since the Club was chartered
in 1964.
There
were no Blastoffs or newsletters in the history
documents, however 21 programs were noted in the
Club Programs and Special Events
listing. The listing notes a Hobo Party
on September 26, 1969 of which there were
newspaper articles and
photographs
.
There were 15
Board meeting
minutes.
There was much discussion in the minutes about drug awareness,
a comment that the District Governor reported that the Club
had been criticized for not being friendly, and that Interact
was not very active. The Club continued to meet at
the Nassau Bay Hotel.

The
July 1, 1970 Semi Annual Report of Club
Membership
noted a membership
of 96 with 7 Honorary members. The
Club's Roster
is based on the July 1, 1970 Semiannual
Report of Club Membership. Three previous presidents
were on the membership roster.
The Apollo 9 crew, McDivitt, Scott, and
Schweickart, was elected to Honorary membership during
1970.
A committee was appointed to study and
develop a fund raising project for the Club. Discussions
were held throughout the year and were carried over into the.
next year. The Club Events Committee was authorized to
proceed with a raffle. The Club continued to support the
Interact Youth Program even though there was less interest
than last year, especially in attendance and activities.
A Club golf tournament was proposed and submitted to the
membership for approval. Handicaps included up to 60
feet of string, one free shot, one free throw, and similar
non-tournament rules.
The 61st Rotary International Convention was held May 31-June
4,1970 in Atlanta, GA, USA . There were 10,803
in attendance. Robert Hobart attended for Rotary of
Space Center. No record could be found regarding
District 589 Conference.
Rotary year 1969-70 was placed in the archives in July 2009.
