Rotary Club of Space
Center named District 589 Best Club
The
history file contained 18 regular and 2 special
Board meeting
minutes, 3
pieces of correspondence, a bounded
document (Club Assembly Report) which contained
plans and goals, the budget,a membership roster, and the
avenues of service committee
members
and a
Shrimporee report. The Club continued to
meet at the Holiday
Inn. Fourteen of the
Club's former presidents were on the
roster. A former District 589 Governor,
Floyd Boze 1981-1982, and a charter member, Vince Lipovsky, attended the
weekly club meetings. Richard Allen, Frank Morgan, Bev
Steadman, and Charles Whynot were on the roster.
The July 1,
1985
Blastoff
had an article
by President Hartman reflecting his tenure. "Based on an interview with
Past President Charles Hartman and his comments to the
membership at the last meeting, this seemed to be what was on
his mind as he wound up his term. "Fifty two weeks seemed like a lot of time before it
happened. Now it seems like there was never enough time
to do all the good things that were in mind.
Nevertheless, with the help of a good set of officers and
directors and club members that went all out to produce a
Shrimporee that broke all records, we did get things
done. Out of the $34,000 plus that was raised, we
contributed to such international causes as: funds to support
underprivileged students in Famgusta, Cypress; the Ethiopian
Relief Fund; American Field Service for foreign exchange
students; and increased our Rotary International contribution
by naming 11 Paul Harris Fellows. That support was in
addition to the local support given to such "regulars" as the
Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Senior Citizens, college scholarships
for local high school students--and more. And during all
this we managed to raise our membership from 144 at the start
of the year to 158 by year end, nearly making our goal of
160."
The Club's Board agreed to sponsor, with St. John's
Hospital, a new and exciting program for free medical care to
special cases of worldwide victims of disasters and congenital
problems. That program will be explained more in the
near future. We are also pursuing what appear to be
promising possibilities for a major role in a Senior Citizens
Center visualized for the Clear Lake
area.
Charles stressed the privilege he considered it to
be to represent the members of Space Center Rotary. And
he gave this advice: Members, especially newer members (22 in
the last 6 months), should realize that the more you
participate in Rotary, the more you will come to know what an
outstanding organization Rotary is. It is a normal
experience that not until you work, do you really feel a part
of Rotary. He urges your personal support and active
involvement on the projects on which new president Bob Wren
will be leading us.——Let's do it.
There were 22
newsletters, Blastoff,
out of a
possible, 48, assuming
that one was issued every Club meeting
day. The
Club Programs and Special Events
listing
contained 36
programs. The newsletters were of various colors, legal
size, and printed on both sides and for the first time
included photographs.
The
budget dated July
15, 1985 (actuals for 1984-85) stated that $30,031 was
donated to
service projects.
There was a
bounded, mostly typed report, prepared by
Don Robison, General Chairman of the Shrimporee,
title"
Shrimporee
84 " that
contains much information about the fund
raiser. There was a summary report in front which provides
a good overview of the activities. There were reports
from the committees, meal tickets,
the
poster
with the Shrimp logo that has been
used since it first appeared in 1976 and probably was used
beginning in 1974, and a financial statement which showed a
net income
of $34,868. The report noted
that there were 2,943 served. The event was held at the
Clear Lake Park Seabrook, Texas for the first time. The
amount of monies made from the fund raisers since the
first recorded fund raiser in 1968 was $190,733
An
application for an international
project under the Health, Hunger, and Humanity
Program of The Rotary Foundation of Rotary International contained
the following description. "To provide plastic surgery and other
associated medical needs
to persons with congenital deformities or
injuries that are the result of disaster.
The program is to be international in scope and
is intended for persons who do not have access to this
type of medical treatment because of inability to pay, geographic unavailability of
facilities or unavailability of medical expertise. St.
John Hospital will provide all medical services
at no charge. Space Center Rotary Club will
provide all transportation, housing for patients." President Hartman signed
the application on June 26,
1985.
There was a well
prepared bounded and typed 1984-85 Plans and Goal "Blue Book"
used for the
Club Assembly dated August 6, 1984. The Plans and Goals
were not put in the archives because all the information is
plans and goals and there is no documentation of the
corresponding accomplishments at the end of the
year.
There was an evaluation of the Club's plans and
goals from District Governor Hollingsworth
stating that the Club was almost a model Rotary Club in regard
to Rotary Information, Rotary Knowledge, and activities in all
lanes of service.
Board
action on June 4, 1985 dropped the title of "Rotary
Anns" for the Rotary wives to "My Rotary Wife."
Board meeting minutes
June 18, 1985 provides a summary
of the more salient activities for the club year as
follows. "Charles Hartman reported on the activities of
three special committees. First, negotiations are
progressing with the county commissioner,
Jim Fonteno, about the amount of money involvement the Space
Center club would have to commit to the
project (Note by
Historian 2009: community center at the Clear Lake Park,
Seabrook, Texas). Second, though the proposed St.
John's
Hospital
Rotary project is still in very early planning stages, much
excitement is being generated by the hospital staff and
Rotarians working on it. Support for the project at the
R.I. level was reported by Bob Wren when he attended the
International Convention. Al Jowid and Ray Khoury
enlisted Rotary wives' support at their monthly luncheon
meeting in June. The regular meeting on July 29th will
be about this project. Third, Charles reported on the
continuing development of plans for an Aerospace awards dinner
similar to the Houston club's Lombardy dinner, with a target
date for the first one to be held in March '87."
(Historian 2009:the beginning of The Rotary National
Award for Space Achievement (RNASA) Foundation is described
in
Special Occasions and
Recognitions.
This write up was
taken from the 2003 RNASA Program and a write up by Bob
Wren, one of the founders of the Foundation, give
excellent insight into the creation of this most
prestigious event).
The
June 4, 1985 minutes of the Board meeting contained
the approval to change the name of "Rotary Anns" to "My Rotary Wife".
On September 5, 1984 the pavilion in
Clear Lake Park
was dedicated to C. D. "Cap" Landolt (second
photo) and became the home of the
Shrimporee.
(Note: Bob Montgomery, Club
member, tells how the
design of the pavilion and kitchen
came about in 2010).
Seven members from the
Club, led by President-Elect Bob Wren, attended the Rotary
District 589 Assembly for incoming club officers and directors
for the Rotary year 85/86. More information in May 20,
1985
Blastoff.
The membership
was 156
members according to
the November 4, 1985 Plans and Objectives.
The only Club
Roster is dated
November 1, 1984. The average attendance for the
Club for 11 months was
81.71%.
There
were thirteen
Paul Harris Fellows
named for
the Rotary Year bringing the total
for the Club to 49 since
1972.
The 76th Rotary
International Convention was held May 26-30,1985 in Kansas
City MO, USA. There were 12,920 in attendance. President Elect
Bob Wren and his companion Jordie, and Billy Weseman attended from
Rotary of Space Center, Houston. The Club
was recognized at the Convention for the Shuttle GAS Payload
Project.
District 589 Conference was
held on April 25-27, 1985 at the San Luis Hotel in Galveston,
Texas. The Club was one of 5 "BEST CLUB" AWARDS
given at the District Conference. Eighteen Club members
attended.
There were two 35mm slide carousels in
the historical material. The slides were a mixture
of events, but focused on President Hartman's year.
Since these two carousels were the only ones on all of
the historical material, it was determined to save them
and put them in this record. They can be viewed by clicking on

Rotary year 1984-85 was placed in the archives in
July 2009.
