President Hargrove was
asked to speak to the Club about what happened in his
year and what Rotary meant to him. His notes
for the speech are found in his own words.
The history file contained no Board meeting minutes, no
correspondence, however there
was a Blue Binder (Club
Assembly Report) which contained plans and
goals, the budget, a membership roster, District
Governor's evaluation of the Club, and the avenues of service
committee
members.
The members of the Club were greatly sadden with the
loss of four of its members: Gene Lindquist, Marvin
Matthews, Cheng Hooi, and Cap Landolt.
The long frustrating hassle with the
problem of a satisfactory meeting place for the Club was
resolved when Charles Hardwick was able to present to a
stand-up Board meeting on
March 9, 1987 the plan to meet at the Nassau Bay Hilton. The
Club met previously at the Holiday Inn in
Nassau Bay. Golf was apparently high on the list of
fellowships for the Club. Golf was mentioned in almost
all of the newsletters with the November 3, 1986
issue
having a write up and picture.
There were 24 newsletters, Blastoffs,
out
of a possible, 47,assuming
that one was issued
every Club meeting day. The
Club
Programs and Special Events listing also
contained 7 programs. Then newsletter was
standard size, mostly beige in color, and filled with many
photographs of members and club activities especially during
the Club regular meetings and information about activities
of the Club such as scholarships and youth exchange
students.Thirteen of the
Club's former presidents were on the roster.
Ann Fulcher played the piano and several of the
members lead in the singing. The four-way test was
periodically repeated at the Club meeting. A
former District 589 Governor, Floyd
Boze 1981-1982,
and a
charter member, Vince Lipovsky, attended the weekly club
meetings. Charter members Frank Morgan, Bev Steadman, and
Charles Whynot were also on the roster, but only Frank and
Bev attended regularly.
There was a well prepared Blue Binder
with the 1985-86 Plans and Goal "Blue
Book"
used for the Club Assembly dated September
29, 1986 and January 26, 1987. The Plans and Goals
were not put in the archives because all the information
is plans and goals and there is no documentation of the
corresponding accomplishments at the end of the year except
as noted in the history. An evaluation
of
the Club's plans and goals by District Governor Lackey
stated that all areas other than Foundation were areas of
strength.
The July 7, 1986 Blastoff,
last page, had included in its issue information
about females becoming Rotarians,
There was a 1986-87 budget with
no date and no year to date expenditures. The amount
of donations
given to service projects was $13,000
assuming that the Shrimporee Beneficiaries were given the monies stated
in the 1986-87 budget and the amounts noted in the
newsletters were given. (Note: President Hargrove, in 2009, stated
that the amount of money donated was much
closer to the amount made by the Shrimporee. Therefore 90%
(22,133) of the money raised was considered in the total. Historian
2009). The amount of monies made from the fund raisers since
the first recorded fund raiser in 1968 was $248,841.
There was no
Shrimporee report but several discussions about it in
the newsletters. The event was held at the
Clear Lake Park Seabrook, Texas September 20,
1986 with Terry Hesson as the
Chairman. The income for the Shrimporee was
$24,592 (December 8, 1986
Blastoff).
Several pictures
and additional information on the Shrimporee can be
viewed in the following Blastoffs: Parade (September 8 ,1986), pictures
of the Shrimporee workers and guests (September 29, 1986 ), and
information ( October 6 , 1986). The
Shrimporee
poster may be viewed by clicking on

The
October 20, 1986 Blastoff shows the model
and some artistic renderings displayed at the Lakewood Yacht
Club meeting and at Bay Area Bank and Trust which
represented an exhibit to be built by the Space Flight Memorial
Foundation for honoring our nation's astronauts. The
Club was proud of its role in bringing this project
into existence.
November 10 was the occasion
for a visit to the club by the
Group Study Exchange Team that PDG Jim Carrel and his wife were going
to lead to India. They traveled principally in the Bombay
area, where the young Indian professional ladies who visited
our club came from.
Several major activities, some started in
prior years, came to fruition in the Rotary year. A
letter dated
February 20, 1987 from President Hargrove summarizes these
activities (a second letter in Spanish follows the one in
English). In addition, his
handwritten notes
from which he made a speech during the visit to Mexico City
gives a good perspective on the activities.
One activity was establishing a sister club
relation with the Aeropuerto Club of Mexico City.
The Club was approached during the previous Rotary year
by
Roberto
Ferrio
to establish a brotherhood between the Aeropuerto
Club of Mexico City and Space Center Rotary Club.
Roberto, who was from Mexico City and working in Houston,
to see if the Club might be interested in establishing a
sister club arrangement with a club located by the Mexico
City airport, the tie being, among other things, aerospace.
The Club agreed to look into it. He related
how he had met and became friends with one of our crew
members, Dick Covey, and he was very enthusiastic about ties
with Mexico since the Mexico City District Rotary clubs were
very excited about and supportive of our space program.
The Museum
of Mexico had only the Russian story and exhibits at that
time. Some
of this had to do with widespread beliefs in Mexico that
the Aztecs, Mayans, etc. had ties with UFO's and past
alien visitors. This relation was culminated in a
meeting in Mexico
City attended by 40 of the
Club's members
and their spouses February 19-22, 1987. The
Fraternity
Declaration
(certificate one in English
and certificate two in Spanish), special
banner reflecting
the relationship, and the
banner of the
Aeropuerto Club of Mexico City were presented to President
Hargrove during the visit to Mexico City
(photo of the exchange).
In the fall of 1985, the Governor of Mexico
District 417 requested aid due to the devastating
earthquake which occurred in September 1985 and again in April
1986 in Mexico City. As the result of the request, a
project of District 589 and the World Community Service
Committee, under Dick Moore, acquired used
hospital and medical
equipment
donated by Memorial Southeast, when they
moved from the Gulfgate area to their new hospital (Memorial
Southeast), to be shipped to the area. Mr. Lee Schroeder of
Central Freight Lines of Houston and Mr. Fernando Navarro,
representing Central Freight Lines in Mexico City provided 2
trailer trucks, free of charge, to transport the hospital
equipment from Houston to Brownsville, Texas. After a two week
delay at the border, which required the American Embassy in
Mexico City to get involved, it was loaded onrailroad
cars
and transported to Mexico City. The
equipment was shipped January 22, 1987. See video
of shipment.
During the previous Rotary year, officers
of the Aeropuerto Club of Mexico City visited the area and
were guests of the Club. According to an article in the
June 9, 1986 Blastoff,
they were seeking information for their Space
Museum to be located inside the Mexico City airport and during
the conversation, told of the damage to their
hospital. A
letter
dated February 20, 1987 from Arg. Sergio Gonzalez de la
Mora to President Hargrove expressed their appreciation
of the efforts that the Club had made in acquiring the NASA
exhibit.
Pictures
associated with the trip to Mexico City are
shown in the in the
picture gallery.
Hilmar Zeissig was the GSE Team Leader to
Mexico and the District 5890 (589) GSE Chairman
The June 8, 1987
Blastoff
contained two brief but important items. The Rotary
World Health Foundation had commitments that two children
would be coming from Mexico for free plastic surgery at
St. John's (these are the first children to begin in the
program, one came in August and one in the fall) and
a picture of the scholarship winners. There was a
very brief reference to the program notes about the
scholars. The
June 22, 1987 Blastoff had a picture
of Amy Hooker and Ginger Barnwell off to Spain and Italy
respectively for a student exchange.
The Board made a commitment
of $2,000 for each year for the next five years to the Capital
Campaign of the Bay Area YMCA.
A picture of Paul Bobko, Rotary Foundation Scholar, is shown
in the July 21, 1986 Blastoff.
Space Center Women of Rotary was officially established with the
installation of its first officers on June 18, 1987. The
wives of members of the Club began to meet for breakfast in
1981 and in 1984 the group began meeting for lunch
in various restaurants. Typically the wife of the
Club's president assumed leadership for the group. Pat
Hargrove took the helm in 1986 (July 7, 1986 Blastoff)
and organized its first fund raiser. Then
in 1987 the wives officially organized. A hand book dated 1987-88 contains
the history of the organization, the officers, duties of
the officers, and the constitution and by-laws.
The membership was
162
members according to the July 20, 1987
Plans and Objectives. There were 30 additions
and 39 terminations leaving a net loss of
9 members. The only Club Roster
is dated September 1986.
There were twelve Paul
Harris Fellows named for the
Rotary Year bringing the total for the Club to 67 since
1972.
The
Rotary National Award for Space Achievement (RNASA) Foundation
had its first stellar
event on March 12,1987 at the Hyatt
Regency Houston, Texas, and presented
Dr. Maxime A.
Faget with the
first National Space Trophy. The wife of John Watson,
Carolyn, reflected on the event in the April 20, 1987 Blastoff under Women of
Rotary. Charles Hartman and Owen Morris were in a
newspaper
article on the event. See color photo of Morris and
Hartman. View a photo gallery of the
banquet. View the numbers 1 and 2 tickets assigned to
Floyd Boze.
The 78th Rotary International Convention
was held June 7-10, 1987 in Munich, Germany.
There were 26,909 in attendance. President Elect McNatt
from Rotary of Space Center, Houston attended.
District 589 Conference was held on April 30- May 2, 1987 at
the New Orleans Hilton in New Orleans, Louisiana.
Approved by President Hargrove and entered into the archives
December 2009.
