Year in Photos

Much of the information in this history was taken from President Fox’s Quarterly reports which can be viewed by clicking on President Fox’s Quarterly Reports . It appears that there was a third quarterly report by the statement that there is a fourth quarterly report, however the report can not be located.

The Club met at the Brentwood Inn (previously named Holiday Inn) in Nassau Bay each Monday at noon with interesting programs from guest speakers and several programs regarding the Club’s activities.  Bill Geissler was the Program Committee Chair.  Debby McBride led the members in songs for most of the meetings and the members shared in leading the Club in the pledge of alliance to the U. S. flag, prayer, and the Four-Way Test.  Club fellowships were facilitated by Roger Donnelly with good attendance and great fellowship.  Golf on Thursday under the leadership of Gary Johnson continued to be a favorite.  A Christmas Party and a trip to the Rodeo provided additional opportunities for fellowship for the Club members and invited guests.  The Christmas party had a surplus of over $500 which was given to the Bay Area Turning Point.  Two of the Club members were former District 5890 governors, Floyd Boze 1981-1982 and Billy Weseman 1993-1994.  Vince Lipovsky, a chartered member of the Club, 16 past presidents, and Floyd Boze continue to attend the weekly Club meetings.

The Board of Directors met twelve times in regular sessions.  Actions and decisions by the Board were recorded in the minutes with one Memorandum for Record dated December 5, 2005 which recorded the election of officers and directors for the next Rotary year.  Attendance to the board meetings by the board members for the year was seventy-five percent.  The avenues of service of the Club’s committees and committee members can be viewed by clicking on committees.  Billy R. Smith was the Club’s Parliamentarian, and maintained and interpreted the Club’s Constitution and By-Laws.

Over
$72,000 was given to service projects, The Rotary Foundation, and The Space Center Rotary Club Endowment Foundation. The income received from the fund raisers exceeded $68,000 bringing the  amount made from the fund raisers since the first recorded fund raiser in 1968 estimated to be $1,037,990.    A comprehensive overview of the  financial condition of the Club can be viewed with the following documents:  summary  of the cash and investment balances in various accounts as of June 30, 2006, and profit and loss  statement from July 1, 2005 through June 30, 2006.  The administrative and service budgets can be viewed by clicking on budget.

There were 29 color issues (out of possible 44) of the Club’s newsletters,
Blastoff, which can be located.  The newsletters contained a variety of interesting items such as the essence of many of the Club’s programs with write-ups and pictures; future programs; make-up opportunities; Shrimporee and Boots and Black Tie VIP Ball information; vitas about Club members; general information about the Club, District, and Rotary International; and promoting fundraisers sponsors and promoting worth while events.  Marilyn Watkins was the editor for first issue and Sharon Bloomfield for the remaining issues.  Bob Mitchell was the photographer.  The Blastoff was published each week on the web page for the convenience the members who were away and cannot make the Club meeting.

The Club’s membership was 118 members based District 5890 listing for July 2006.  The Club’s roster dated June 2006 can be viewed by clicking on roster.  The Phone Tree was handled by Murray Epstein

The 32nd Shrimporee was held on November 19, 2005 at the Clear Lake Park, in Seabrook, Texas.  The sponsors can be seen by viewing November 21, 2005
Blastoff.  The event was moved about 2 months due to hurricane Rita coming ashore on September 21, 2005.  It turned out to be a great event yielding $67,978 income with $12,451 expenses leaving a net of $55,527 (re: Shrimporee 2005 Financial Report ).  Advertisements were made via TV, ads and signs.  The original date of September 24 had to be changed due to hurricane Rita.  A date in October was requested, but not available, fortunately November 19 was available.  The November date turned out to be a good date due to the cooler weather.  The 32nd Shrimporee poster or sponsor package can be seen by clicking on Shrimporee Poster or package.   A newspaper article in The Citizen shows some Club members and guests.  Historian 2009: President Fox noted in May of 2010 the following: "I did one almost unheard of thing, I saw that the cooking of fish during the heat of Houston summers was a bit too much for the guys, so in order to prevent a tragedy of someone dying from heat stroke, I changed the dinner fare.  In stead of fish, I had it changed to Bar-B-Q  brisket and Shrimp. The Bar-B-Q was cooked elsewhere and brought in, yet there was some that could be prepared at the meeting. Many said it would never fly, but it is the fare today.  We had no Bar-B-Q left, but plenty of shrimp.  Also the traditional cole slaw was changed to boiled corn on the corn..."

The Boots and Black Tie VIP Ball (the sixth fundraiser held in addition to the Shrimporee) was held on May 5, 2006 at the Marker 1 Marina, Seabrook, Texas.  The event brought in $26,510 with expenses being $13,283 leaving a net of $13,227 (re: B&BT 2006 Financial Statement ).  Texas Roadhouse (Tony Bloomfield) catered a delicious meal, there were live and silent auctions, and all the dancing you could stand.  Travis Vemeer of Ben Bridge Jeweler provided an Omega watch valued at $3,200 for the raffle prize.  Tony Bloomfield won the watch.  Over 100 guests attended.  The Program can be viewed by clicking on B&BT 2006 Program.

A new web page was constructed and kept up-to-date.  A comprehensive database was prepared and resided on the web page, password protected, and available to members only. The Club membership was kept informed in real time of items of interest at the District level and the Club level.

Jerry Smith took desk, chairs and school furniture to a school in Mexico.  He would then bought items there for the Shrimporee.  The Club sponsored the project with a $500 donation.  (Historian 2009 note: Jerry noted in March 2010 that he had made this trip for probably 10 years).  Members of the Club delivered approximately 100 second grade school books to the Gardens Elementary School in Pasadena at no cost to the Club.  The Club furnished materials and volunteers to build a
ramp for the Bernard family (father had recently lost a leg) in League City.  Six necklace alert systems pendants were purchased for $1,500 to be given to persons who live alone and are prone to falling.  Interfaith Caring Ministries and other agencies that deal with candidates for the system were contacted for information about eligible individuals.  Several individuals have been recipients of the alert pendant.

A very worthwhile project was undertaken concerning an old
farmhouse in Armand Bayou that needed restoring, but little action had been taken.  A conversation with Mr. Lou Horning, revealed that a company would level the farmhouse for $3500.  The Club signed a memorandum of agreement with Armand Bayou Nature Center and donated the money to level the farmhouse.  The leveling was finished but there was a need of volunteer hands-on work on the farmhouse.  A thank you letter was received from Candy Donahue, Executive Director Armand Bayou Nature Center, for the contribution that the Club made.

Members of the Club were invited to witness a demonstration of using computers for the blind.  A young woman from Nicaragua, blind from birth, was being taught to use the computer in order that she could train other blind students.  The computer program was phenomenal in that it reads out in audio every thing that is being typed.  It supports all of Microsoft programs as well as other installed programs.  The Galleria Club sponsored the program.  It was also learned that there was a need for Brailles to be used by the students in the school.  Six Braille’s were purchased by Space Center Rotary Club and taken to Nicaragua in July.  One of the six was purchased with the $400 donation given to the Club by the Interact Club of Clear Lake High School (re: April 3, 2006 Blastoff)

The Club supported hurricane Katrina relief effort in numerous ways.  The Club’s members provided over 200 man days helping the Katrina refugees in Houston and the Bay Area.  The Club supported District 5890’s request for $30.00 per member for the Katrina disaster resulting in $2,600 being given to the District.  The Club also joined the Sharpstown Rotary club in a project with two clubs in Louisiana.  The Sharpstown Rotary Club matched any fund sent.  The Club gave $1000 and Mike Dennard received $1000 from a Club in Africa designated for the Sharpstown Club.  It also matched the gift from Africa.  Pictures of Past President Suzi Howe and views of the astrodome where the refugees were lodged can be viewed by clicking on Katrina Refugees .

After having determined that FEMA was concentrating on New Orleans, the Club’s Board decided that any help, other than that which we had given, would be concentrated in Mississippi around Gulf Port or Pascagoula.  As a result, the Club contacted the District Governor in Mississippi and found a
school that had severe damage and no FEMA help.  The local club in Gulfport was contacted and a matching grant was applied for and was received.  The total was for $16,000 of which $8000.00 was donated by the Club and a matching amount of $8000.00 from The Rotary International.  This grant to the Club is an excellent example of the payback from the money that the Club members donated to the Rotary Foundation.  An article in the Citizen Newspaper dated June 6, 2006 shows President Elect Geoff Atwater presenting the $16,000 to Drew Allen, President of the Gulfport Rotary Club (the article can be zoomed in and out by rotating the wheel on the mouse, and be moved by left clicking and moving the mouse).  View photos of park on September 11, 2006.

The Club supported the Boy Scouts troop in La Porte and finished the installation of a Boy Scout troop in the Harris County Youth Village.  A member of our Club, who was  deceased, originated the troop.  $3000 was given to Police officers for their DARE program and a gift of $1000 was given to the Bay Area Turning Point.  Three area high schools participated in a graduation “lock-in dance” which was supported by the Club.  A Rotary presence was widely posted at the affair.  The Space Center Rotary Club Endowment Foundation gave $10,000 designated for the Perry Family YMCA bringing the amount given to $15,000.  The initial commitment was $25,000 payable over five years.

Club member Hilmar Zeissig was the District 5890 International Service Chairman.

The Guerrero Clinic in Guerrero, Mexico was given $5,000 in support of the Clinic.  The conduit for the donation is the Rotary Club of Brazosport.  The “Guerrero team” made a presentation of the Club that resulted in many of the Club members giving individual contributions to the Guerrero project and some members working at the clinic.

Mardy Torres received $750 as winner of the Clear Creek Independent School District Drug Awareness Essay Scholarship.  The Scholarship Committee, chaired by Belinda Skloss, awarded six $500 scholarships to students in the Clear Creek Independent School District.  The recipients were Geoffrey Sai-Kid Lau, Lisa Zhou, Christina Adriana Villareal, Jayne Marshall, Maria Perez, and James Nathaniel Hale.

There was one Ambassadorial Scholarship applicant but she failed to win a scholarship.  She decided not to apply the next year but pursue employment after she graduated.  There was no active committee on Rotaract.

International Youth Exchange was the subject of the program at the April 17, 2006 Club meeting.  Nicole Piaskowy of Brazil and Ramon Moros of Columbia presented interesting programs on their native country, family, and culture, and their observations while in the United States.  Out bound students Julie Davis was in Argentina, Ben Bahlmann in Poland, and Andrew Bahlmann in Brazil.  Issues of the August 29, 2005 Blastoff and October 17, 2005 Blastoff have excerpts from Andrew’s letters to the Club and the March 27, 2006 Blastoff has an excerpt from a letter by Julie Raye to Alan Wylie.  This was the 21st year that the Club supported the International Youth Exchange program.  Alan Wylie was elected President of the Southwest Rotary Youth Exchange.

A Group Study Team from District 9320 South Africa visited the United States from February 20 to March 22 and made a presentation to the Club on March 20.  Team members were Tracy Thomas, Shameem Ranchod, Mark Berndt, and Shauna-Lee Stephen.  Karen de Jager was the team leader.  Club member, Mike Dennard led a GSE Team on a month long visit in June 2006 to Johannesburg, South Africa.

The 16th annual Excellence in Education Committee selected six teachers, Maureen Zahn of Ward Elementary School, Joyce Scott of Stewart Elementary, Christine Mazurek of Goforth Elementary, Teresa Koehler of League City Intermediate, Catherine Corbett, and Cythnia Taylor of League City Intermediate, in the primary and secondary schools of the Clear Creek Independent School District for the Distinguished Service awards.  From this group, Christine Mazurek and Teresa Koehler  (view photo Denise Platt, Christine Mazurek, Teresa Koehler,   David Coney) were honored as “Teacher of the Year”.  The teachers of the year received $500.00 each and the others $300.00 each.

The Excellence in Public Service committee selected five officers, Gina Gonzales, Michael Cordero, Marc Hatton, Randy Howell, and Kurt Rogers, for the Distinguished Officer Award.  Each received $300.00.  From this group, Michael Cordero (center  with Michael Moliere on the left  and President Fox right) was awarded the “Officer of the Year” and received an additional $700.00.  This was the 14th year for the Excellence in Public Service program although awards were not given in Rotary years 2002-03, 2003-04, and 2004-05.

An unusual
award was given the Club by the Rotary Club of Golders Green.  A tree has been planted in honor of Rotary Club of Space Center (Houston) in the Pestalozzi Rotary Forest which was founded in 1992 for the Silver Jubilee Year by the Rotary Club of Golders Green East Sussex, England.  The certificate is number 527.

President Fox made a trip to Rwanda, Africa and made his observations in a  undated memo.

The Club added 9
Paul Harris Fellows bringing the total to 283 since the first recorded Paul Harris Fellow in 1973.

The 97th Rotary International Convention was held June 11-14, 2006  in Malmo, Sweden/Copenhagen, Denmark.  There were 14,807 in attendance.  President Elect Geoff and Vivian Atwater of Rotary of Space Center, Houston attended. Go with President Atwater and his wife Vivian to the Rotary International Convention in a
photo presentation.

District 5890 Conference was held April 27-30, 2006 at the Doral Tesoro Hotel in Fort Worth, Texas.

The Rotary National Award for Space Achievement (RNASA) Foundation presented Col. Eileen Collins with the 2006 National Space Trophy at the 20th annual stellar event held on March 24, 2006 at Space Center Houston.  Proceeds of the event went to benefit the High School Aerospace Scholars program held at Johnson Space Center for the 7th year.  The front cover of the 2006 Rotary National Award for Space Achievement Program can be viewed by clicking on 2006 RNASA Program.

President Fox has approved the history for Rotary year 2005-06 and it was placed in archives May 2010.
