A Day of
Sadness, Excitement, and Eager Anticipation
This, the last club meeting for the Rotary
Year 2009-10, June 28, was filled with mixed
emotions. It was proclaimed Jon R. McKinnie
Day by the City
of Houston "…in recognition of his community spirit, and
involvement in local, state, and national civic
activities. Jon R. McKinnie's honors include
"Outstanding Young Business Leaders to Watch" in America, and
"Rotarian of the Year" for Arkansas (2005) and Houston (2009)
among many others." See
presentation of Proclamation. The incoming President,
Officers, and
Directors
for Rotary Year 2101-11 were "sworn in" by District 5890
Governor Sunny Sharma
. He also recognized two new members,
Santiago
Mendoza and
Bimal Vora , making them the 20th and 21st new members for
the year.
Outgoing President
McKinnie completed giving his awards out and officially passed
the
Presidential
Gavel to incoming President
Coney. Incoming President Coney presented outgoing
President McKinnie with a
plaque of appreciation and President McKinnie's favorite,
a bottle of Scotch. Stan Galanski received the Club's
Rotarian of Year
Award
and his wife Susan a
Paul Harris
Fellow
. Stan also received
the Rotary International "Service Above Self" award in April,
an award given only to 150 persons worldwide. Stan has
been actively involved with water projects in Bolivia since
2004.
With a note of sadness the club members said
goodbye to two inbound International Exchange Students who had
been with local families and attended local high schools for a
year. They were Sirida Sombatto (Jen)
(center) inbound International Exchange Students
from Thailand and Leonardo Briones (left) from Edcuador. Also
present were other International Exchange Students.
Pam
Ugalde and Donna Hussey, San Jacinto Girl Scouts, were given
$1,000 to be used to help the troop
members earn Silver and Gold Awards, and to start a new Daisy
(kindergarten age) troop.
And last
but not least club members met the Coney family .
