October 4, 2010 Club Meeting
Review
"Be sure to tell your friends about Shrimporee, and sell
tickets!"...Big Shrimp
The meeting had
a big Texas kickoff with Deep in the Heart of
Texas lead by Debbie McBride, with Mike
Hernandez the pledge of allegiance to the U. S.
Flag, Suzi Howe the Four-Way Test, President
Coney the invocation, and Cindy Harreld the introduction
of guest and visiting Rotarians. President David Coney presented the
following attendance awards:
1 year perfect
attendance to Mike Dennard
3 years perfect
attendance to Jon McKinnie
13 years perfect
attendance to Bill Lowes
30 years perfect
attendance to Al Ligrani
President Coney
reminded the membership that meetings can be made up with
other clubs on line. Assistant District 5890 Governor
Chris Schneider presented an award for Outstanding Service and
Dedication on behalf of District 5890 Governor Sunny Sharma to
Floyd Boze
Mike Hernandez
introduced Randy Hornig representing the Sam Houston Area
Council of Boy Scouts. The Council is planning for 2011
and is recruiting volunteers to help with events and fund
raising. Volunteer sign up cards are on each
table. President Coney demonstrated accessing the club
web site, pointed out the tremendous amount of information
available on the site, and recognized Jerrold Dewease for the
many hours he has invested in building the data base. He
asked everyone to spend some time tinkering with the web
site. Any one needing help in accessing the site can see
Jerrold before or after Rotary meetings. There is no
meeting next week, however, members are reminded that the
Board has approved the Bylaw revisions and we will be voting
on those this month. They are posted on the web
site.
Mike “Big Chief
Shrimp” Dennard discussed plans for the upcoming
Shrimporee. He noted that Shrimporee is the Club’s major
fundraiser, and also begins the process each year of serving
those who need our help. Space Center Rotary supports 25
domestic and 13 international projects, and the bulk of the
funding is provided by Shrimporee and Springoree. Dr.
Greg Smith announced that he has received 9 of the 18 baskets
for the silent auction. Courtney Lindbergh is collecting
ticket sale money. Any unsold tickets need to be
returned to her. Only 46 people have paid to date.
Funds from ticket sales are what pay for the food for
Shrimporee, so your ticket money needs to be turned in as soon
as possible. Alice May-Sexton displayed the David Yurman
necklace donated by Lewis Jewelers for the raffle. The
necklace is valued at $2500. Raffle tickets are $10 each
or 6 for $50. Scott Rainey reported that sponsors are up
to $40,500. He recognized Gene Tromblee as a $5000 donor
and Mike Cornett for his double sponsorship through Storage
Corral and Texas Citizens Bank. The Big Chief Shrimp
(minus his shrimp head) reminded everyone that the last two
planning meetings are tomorrow and next Tuesday, and asked
that everyone please take care of their pledges as soon as
possible. Be sure to tell your friends about Shrimporee,
and sell tickets!
Suzi Howe
asked for a donation for a student in need of a computer
monitor. Micki Czarnik announced that the Ladies of
Rotary will meet for lunch on October 13th at Tommy’s
Restaurant on Bay Area. Desserts are needed for the
Shrimporee sweet booth. Jack Lister announced that they
are still looking for 2 more host families for a student from
Slovakia. The Clear Creek High School attendance zone is
preferred. The meeting adjourned with a reminder that
there is no meeting next week due to the Columbus Day
holiday.
