Closing remarks by President Atwater reflecting on the highlights of his year

"Rotary changes lives by raising expectations. Whether a teacher in a local school or a farmer in the Bolivian Andes, a small check or a small project can improve peoples lives. Many people we will never meet have benefited from funds given by our club. We have succeeded in not only raising their expectations of what is possible; we have also succeeded in raising our own expectations. Rotary changes lives one project at a time." Read the entire highlights.

The Club met each Monday at noon at the Holiday Inn in Nassau Bay until September 11, 2006 at which time it moved to the Bay Oaks Country Club led the members in songs for most of the meetings and the members shared in saying the pledge to the U. S. flag, the prayer, and the Four-Way Test.  Club fellowships were facilitated by Roger Donnelly with good attendance and great fellowship.  Golf on Thursday under the leadership of Dick Kidder continued to be a favorite.  A Christmas Party and a trip to the Rodeo provided additional opportunities for fellowship for the club members and invited guests.  Two of the Club members were former District 5890 governors, Floyd D. Boze 1981-1982 and Billy D. Weseman 1993-1994.  Susan "Suzi" Howe  became District 5890 governor during the Rotary year.  Vince Lipovsky, a chartered member of the Club, 17 past presidents, Floyd Boze, and Suzi Howe continue to attend the weekly Club meetings.  The Club’s history was being organized and placed in electronic files on a separate web site.

The Board of Directors met 12 times in regular sessions and one called meeting.  Actions and decisions by the Board are recorded in the minutes.  The avenues of service and the committees chairs can be viewed by clicking on committees. Billy R. Smith was the Club’s Parliamentarian, and maintained and interpreted the Club’s Constitution and By-Laws.

The Club’s
membership at the end of the Rotary year was 114 members and 3 honorary members. The Club's roster as of December 2006  can be viewed by clicking on Club Roster.

Over $82,000, the largest amount given to-date, was given to service projects and The Rotary International Foundation during the Rotary year. A comprehensive financial overview is provided by clicking on the Balance Sheet as of June 30, 2007; and Profit and Loss Statement for the Profit and Loss statement from July 1, 2006 through June 30, 2007.  The administrative and service budgets can be viewed by clicking on budget.

There were 43 (out of possible 45) colored issues of the Club’s newsletters, Blastoff, which can be located.  The newsletters contained a variety of interesting items such as the essence of many of the Club’s programs with write-ups and pictures; future programs; make-up opportunities; Shrimporee and Springoree information; vitas about Club members; general information about the Club, District, and Rotary International; and promoting fundraisers sponsors and promoting worth while events.  Sharon Bloomfield was the editor until August 28th at which time Billy Smith became the editor.  Bob Mitchell was the photographer.  Photos were taken for most events and programs and used in the Blastoff.  The Blastoff was published each week on the web page for the convenience the members who were away and cannot make the Club meeting.

This was the 7th year that another major fundraiser was held in addition to the Shrimporee.  The Springoree, chaired by Mike Hesse, was held on March 29 at Bulter’s Court Yard in League City, Texas.  Tim Kropp won the raffle prize, an Omega wristwatch provided by Ben Bridge Jeweler courtesy of Travis Vermeer.  It was a successful and fun event raising $38,480 with expenses of $13,011 leaving a net of $25,469 (re:
Springoree Financial Statement 2007 ).  View ticket and sponsor logos.   The 33rd Shrimporee, chaired by Dick Gregg, III, was held on October 28, 2006 at the Clear Lake Park, in Seabrook, Texas.   It turned out to be a great event yielding $67,834 income with $13,834 expenses leaving a net of $54,000 (re: preliminary Shrimporee Financial Statement 2006 ).  The 33rd Shrimporee poster can be seen by clicking on 2006 Shrimporee Poster and flyer by clicking on 2006 Shrimporee Flyer.   However the total amount entered into the financial record was $77,600   This brings the total amount made from the fund raisers since the first recorded fund raiser in 1968 is estimated to be $1,117,459.

Space Center Rotary Club, the Galveston County Health District, and Interfaith Caring Ministries worked together in an outreach community program (Blane Community Immunization Grant 375) offering nursing, nursing assistance and immunization serum to both pre-schooled and school aged children up to 18 years of age who were under immunized due to either a lack of funding and/or parental awareness to the importance of age appropriate immunization.  Interfaith Caring Ministries provided the location site for the immunization clinic in addition to developing promotional material and conducting public service announcements.  The Interfaith Caring Ministries location attracted families who were need for food pantry and overall special needs assistance.  The Club’s members participated with community outreach announcing immunization events to local establishments and provided service duties at five immunization events assisting the Galveston County Health District nurses, clinical screening personnel and Interfaith Caring Ministries staff with facilitating immunization administration.  Children were provided school supplies and goodies during this event.  A detail report by Jennifer Keller can be viewed by clicking on Blane Grant 375 Report. Pictures of the Club giving a $2000 in matching grant money ($1000 from the Club) to Interfaith Caring Ministries is shown in the August 7, 2006 Blastoff (NA).  The fourth immunization event and an immunization flier can be viewed also.

The Club made a $5,000
donation to support the work at the Guerrero Surgery and Education Center in Guerrero, Mexico.  This amount was also given last year by the Club.  Johnny White and his wife Sharon made a trip to the Center earlier in 2007.  They said that it was a life changing experience, visions were corrected and blind eyes opened.  The people were so grateful for the workers who volunteered their time and talents to help them.  Johnny did a variety of jobs from truck driver, carpenter, to pharmacist.  Several pictures about the trip is shown in the April 9, 2007 Blastoff.

The Club established a partnership with the JSC chapter of Engineers Without Borders to fund third-world water projects and continued to support water projects in Bolivia coordinated by Stan Galanski, see December 4, 2006 Blastoff.  View a slide presentation on the Bolivia Water Project  given November 24, 2008.  Also support for the Katrina projects through donations to the Pass Christian Rotary Club and the Habitat for Humanity continued.
